Male Gaze

The 'male gaze' is a theory that all of the media is viewed through the eyes of a heterosexual male. It is shown as how a heterosexual male would want to see media. Such as magazine covers. When a female is the front cover of a magazine it is always largely sexualized. Such as these covers:

Where as when a male is the front cover of a magazine it is vastly different:

This is also present in film, such as when a female actor is introduced the camera is often shown through a male protagonists eyes(FOV), the camera often starts at the feet of the woman and woks its up to her face. She is often shown wearing sexualized clothing.

How Trump was represented in the media

When Trump was elected the Daily Mirror released this issue of their news paper, the statue of liberty looks as if she is almost crying. This is meant to symbolize the feelings of all America in that they are devastated that Trump was elected into power, this is because the statue of liberty is such a popular icon in American culture.

Trump isn't shown in this print, however it is clear who the focus is. This is due to the trademarks of Trump, such as his hair and the reference to his amount of hand gestures, and the choice of words. Calling Trump a psycho, and comparing his to a film character that murders people for sport and is untouchable by the police because of how well he hides the murders. This could have possibly been a reference to how Trump never receives any back lash from things he has said in interviews, even through they are wrong.

Stuart Hall

Stuart Hall
Hall said that representation is the production of meaning through language (spoken or visual). He suggests that reality is meditated though language.
What is media language?
- something that tells you something
- such as buy this, or do that
something that is medeated
-the way its influenced
- taking reality and adding media language and it becomes reality
- the media forms their version of reality, it is not real reality
- will always have an agenda or propose
- the way the Russian x spy's story is presented(our version of events are different to that of Russia's)
it has been mediated, there is no truth in the media
-they mediate the news to suit their audience(such as a left wing newspaper)
- can no longer mediate smoking as glamorous(can no longer sponser sport events)
- Mayweather, Megregor mediated to the point where fans started to believe that Mayweather would loose the fight
Stereotyping
- Theorist Richard Dyer wrote 'The role of stereotypes'
What are stereotypes? - makes the audience think that that is normally, makes them act differently, such as racist steriotypes making people leave the EU
- often used in the media
- things that can apply to a group of people but don't always, yet are wrote as if they do
Brexit - people only want to leave because foreigners are coming into their county
Stereotypes over simplifies traits to present order
- teenager with hoods up will mug you (stereotyping)
Stereotyped characters
A good example of stereotyping of TV characters is the Simpsons. They portray many characters as the media perceives them. Such as Apu, his culture is portrayed as comedy because it is different from our own, as well as this he owns a corner shop, another stereotype.

Another example of this is willy the groundkeeper, such as his accent as well as his stereotypical temper, due to him being Scottish. As well as this they show the charter in kilts being very physically
strong.

Day 1 of Shooting

Dailys

The first thing we did was to write up a script, which was later changed due to the budget. On day one of shooting it was mainly just the crew getting used to the equipment provided for the production, such as the cameras and tripods. This was an accidental shot taken by a member of the crew.

Once the crew had worked out the correct settings and functions for the equipment miss shots were cut to a minimum.
This film was shot in sequence until like other films of this kind, day one of shooting was very productive. Shots of Robert were taken on the set which is visible at the beginning of the film such as the bench scene. A lot of production time was used to contain the public from wondering into shot, as it is illegal to film a person without their consent. As well as this shots were taken of Robert using a scratch card to symbolize his gambling addiction. This is explained in more depth during the directors commentary.

Music Videos and Genres

The music video i have chosen to analyze is 'The Importance of being Idle' by the British band 'Oasis'. The old black and white colour scheme of the video, this was to add the affect of the video being older than it is. This

Script

The synopsis goes as follows, a man wakes up on a park bench not knowing where he is or how he got there(this is unchanged from the original film). It then precedes to go directly to a flash back of the character gambling with items such as scratch cards and slot machines( this is because these forms of gambling are cheap, he cannot afford poker due to the amount of money he has lost). The screen then cuts to black and reads 'two weeks earlier'. It then cuts to a medium close up of our main character holding a bottle of alcohol( his other addiction). The camera then cuts to a close up of his mobile phone, showing a contact that reads 'wife and son'. He proceeds then p  to read out the text to the audience, parts of the text were censored for the benefit of younger viewers. He then stands up and vows to give up drinking as well as gambling. Another character then enters, credited as 'friend', they have a short conversation which quickly heats up leading in to a fist fight, this has also been removed again for the benefit of younger viewers. A short clip of the main character lying on the ground to signify he lost the fight. The screen then again cuts to black and reads ' After a long hard look at himself, Lewis (this is when the audience first learn the characters name) decided to enter a twelve step rehabilitation program, and start a talking group of his own to help anyone with his affliction'. The last shot of the film is an over the shoulder shot, it follows a character credited as 'AA member' to one of Lewis's AA meetings, the door of the room then closes and a sign reads ' Lewis's gambling and alcohol rehabilitation centre'. The credits then roll.

Inspiration for short film

Some insperation for this film came from the Jason Bourne franchise, mainly the first entry. With both the titles having similar plots, a man that doesn't know his own identity is chased by the police. He is then confronted by some one that helps him regain his identity. The music used in this film would be dramatic and able to build suspense , much like its predecessor.
The main actor of the film would wear wardrobe related to the genre and the topic of the film itself. Such as dark clothing to symbolize his clouded and dark mind. The character would also have an unkept look, (such as his hair) to relate to someone that is really in this situation. This scene from the Bourne Identity would be similar to the opening now that would be at the begging of the short film.

Another film mine is very reminiscent of is Mark Wallburgs film 'The Gambler'.
It follows its main character to show his most powerful vice, gambling. Unlike my film which is about my character loosing everything, The Gambler is about this character getting everything. I also took some inspiration from the camera shots of The Gambler. Such as the long shots used. It also has similarities due to the almost identical.

Story board

A story board was important for production because it helped me visualize my story and helped me to keep a strict squedual during filming.
