Stuart Hall

Stuart Hall
Hall said that representation is the production of meaning through language (spoken or visual). He suggests that reality is meditated though language.
What is media language?
- something that tells you something
- such as buy this, or do that
something that is medeated
-the way its influenced
- taking reality and adding media language and it becomes reality
- the media forms their version of reality, it is not real reality
- will always have an agenda or propose
- the way the Russian x spy's story is presented(our version of events are different to that of Russia's)
it has been mediated, there is no truth in the media
-they mediate the news to suit their audience(such as a left wing newspaper)
- can no longer mediate smoking as glamorous(can no longer sponser sport events)
- Mayweather, Megregor mediated to the point where fans started to believe that Mayweather would loose the fight
Stereotyping
- Theorist Richard Dyer wrote 'The role of stereotypes'
What are stereotypes? - makes the audience think that that is normally, makes them act differently, such as racist steriotypes making people leave the EU
- often used in the media
- things that can apply to a group of people but don't always, yet are wrote as if they do
Brexit - people only want to leave because foreigners are coming into their county
Stereotypes over simplifies traits to present order
- teenager with hoods up will mug you (stereotyping)
Stereotyped characters
A good example of stereotyping of TV characters is the Simpsons. They portray many characters as the media perceives them. Such as Apu, his culture is portrayed as comedy because it is different from our own, as well as this he owns a corner shop, another stereotype.

Another example of this is willy the groundkeeper, such as his accent as well as his stereotypical temper, due to him being Scottish. As well as this they show the charter in kilts being very physically
strong.
